GUIDE TO LEGISLATIVE INTERACTION

  1. Be specific - Know what bill you are commenting on, bill numbers are helpful. Make sure to identify if your comments are directed towards the bill or an amendment for that bill.
  2. Identify yourself - You will be given serious consideration if you are a constituent. Make sure to address your representative. The Chamber has provided a map of the board of supervisors districts. Ashland Town Council members are voted for by all town citizens.
  3. Be respectful - Use examples when presenting your side of an issue, don't become argumentative or make threats (i.e. "don't count on my vote next election..."). U.S. Senators are to be addressed as " The Honorable (full name) " in correspondence.
  4. Be timely - The best time to present comments is while a bill is still under deliberation, not after it has already passed into law. Be patient if you have presented an idea for a new law.
